Agape Global Health for Haiti
We are a nonprofit, volunteer organization with a mission to help advance and promote the healthcare and well being of the people of La Gonave, Haiti. We provide direct medical care, public health education, medical training and water filtration kits.
In 2019, we opened a permanent health care clinic where our local staff physician and staff midwife provide prenatal care and treat hypertension for the people of La Gonave.
Where We Work
La Gonave is Haiti’s largest island. It measures approximately 266 square miles and is home to about 120,000 residents. The island is remote and up until now has been mostly ignored by the government, organizations and the private sector in Haiti.
The people of La Gonave face tremendous medical and public health challenges including malnutrition, anemia, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, skin infections, wounds, cataracts and dental disease. There is only one hospital which is poorly staffed and therefore most people go without basic healthcare.
The island also lacks clean water, sanitation, regular electricity and dependable internet.
What We Do
Agape Clinic
In 2017, Agape established a permanent clinic in La Gonave, Haiti. We hired two clinicians, Charlotte Henry, MD and midwife Jean Wiselande who provide prenatal care and treat hypertension five days a week. Johanne Sebastien is our clinic manager and Joseph Wilto manages the water filtration program.
Trip
For more than ten years, a dynamic team of volunteer clinicians, educators and support staff traveled to La Gonave to see patients who face tremendous medical and health challenges. Our volunteer team makes a direct impact providing medical care, free medications and training, leaving behind knowledge to empower the community. All their travel expenses are self-funded.
Health Education
Agape supplies health education and tools to teach students proper hand washing and personal hygiene. The children learn soap saves lives. We provide hygiene kits that include soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and nail clippers. We leave behind posters and lesson plans to enable teachers to keep educating after we depart.
Menstrual Health Education
Agape’s education team provides life changing knowledge, focusing on menstrual health, teaching girls and women about their bodies and menstruation. We have partnered with the international organization, Days for Girls, to provide washable, reusable menstrual kits which empowers girls to stay in school when they’re menstruating.
Clean Water
Agape partnered with the nonprofit Water with Blessings to implement a project that trains and equips women to produce clean water. They use high-efficiency filtration systems to supply safe drinking water for their families and three other families.
